BCom Fresher Resume Format: A Section-by-Section Guide
B.Com is one of India's largest degrees and gets almost no targeted resume advice, so commerce freshers copy engineering templates. Here is the format that actually fits: what counts as material without an internship, how the page shifts by role, and how to write a CA attempt honestly.
A BCom fresher resume is one of the hardest documents to get right in India, and almost nobody writes advice for it. Commerce is one of the largest undergraduate streams in the country by enrolment, according to the government's All India Survey on Higher Education. Yet search for resume help and what comes back is written for engineers: projects, tech stacks, GitHub links, a skills grid full of programming languages. So B.Com graduates copy that shape, delete the parts they cannot fill, and end up with a page that says almost nothing.
This guide is written for the actual situation. You have a three-year degree, possibly no internship, possibly a CA attempt behind you, and a set of experiences you have been taught to think of as not counting. Most of them count. The skill is presenting them as work without inflating them into something they were not.
The honest starting point
Start by accepting two things at once.
First: a B.Com with no internship is not an empty resume. It is an unwritten one. There is a real difference. Recruiters at accounting firms and back-office teams are not expecting a fresher to have run an audit. They are checking whether you understand what the work is, whether you can handle numbers without panic, and whether you will still be there in eight months.
Second: you cannot fix a thin page by adding adjectives. "Highly motivated and detail-oriented finance professional with excellent communication skills" is the single most common opening line on a commerce fresher resume, and it is invisible. Everyone writes it. It survives no comparison. What survives is specifics — a ledger you maintained, a number of entries, a software you actually opened.
The honest version of your position is: you have material, it is unglamorous, and it has never been written down properly. That is a solvable problem.
What counts as material, even with no internship
Go through this list before you write a single line. Most B.Com students find three or four items they had dismissed.
- Coursework you actually applied. Not "studied Financial Accounting." Rather: prepared final accounts from trial balance, computed depreciation under written-down value and straight-line methods, worked through ratio analysis on published annual reports, filed a mock GST return in a computer lab.
- Family business or shop bookkeeping. This is the most undervalued line on Indian commerce resumes. If you maintained cash books, matched daily sales with UPI settlements, tracked credit customers, or organised purchase bills for your family's shop or your uncle's distribution business, that is bookkeeping experience. Write it as a role with a duration.
- Tuition and teaching. Two years teaching accountancy to Class 11 and 12 students is not filler. It shows subject command, reliability and the ability to explain a concept — which is most of what a junior finance job requires when a client asks a question.
- College committee finance roles. Treasurer of the commerce society, accounts handler for the annual fest, the person who collected registration money and reconciled it against the expense sheet. Budget handled, vendors dealt with, records kept.
- NSS, NCC, cooperative store duty. Attendance registers, stock counts, collection drives. Modest, but real, and it reads as someone who turned up.
- Part-time work of any kind. Retail billing, telecalling, data entry, delivery, exam invigilation support. Cash handling and billing software are directly relevant to back-office and accounts roles.
The line between presenting and inflating is simple. Presenting means describing what happened in the language the industry uses. Inflating means describing something that did not happen. Turning "handled the fest accounts" into "managed financial operations for a ₹1.2 lakh event budget, reconciling collections against vendor payments" is presenting, if the figure is true. Calling yourself an "Assistant Accountant" at a firm you never joined is inflating. One gets you an interview. The other collapses in the first two questions.
The structure, section by section
One page. Reverse chronological. Left-aligned. No photograph, no columns, no chart of skill percentages.
Contact block. Name, phone with country code, a professional email address, city and state, LinkedIn if the profile is filled in. Skip full postal address, age, marital status, father's name and passport number. They are conventions from an older format and they take space you need.
Summary — three lines, or none. Write it last. State what you are, one thing you can do, and what you are applying for. "B.Com (Accounting and Finance) graduate, 2026, with Tally ERP 9 and advanced Excel. Maintained day books and GST purchase records for a family retail business for two years. Applying for accounts executive roles in Pune." That is concrete and it is honest.
Education. Degree, specialisation, college, university, year, and your percentage or CGPA. Put it high on the page — for a fresher it is a real credential, not a formality. Add Class 12 with the stream and marks. Include Class 10 only if you have room. If your marks are modest, do not hide them; a missing number reads worse than a 58%.
Certifications and professional exams. Its own section, above experience, because for commerce roles this is often what the recruiter is scanning for.
Experience or Relevant Experience. If you have internships, call it Experience. If you have bookkeeping, tuition and committee work, call it Relevant Experience and list it the same way — role, organisation, dates, two or three bullets each. The heading does the honest work of signalling it was not a formal job, so the bullets can be written with full confidence.
Projects and academic work. A ratio analysis of two listed companies, a GST compliance study, a survey-based project on digital payments in your locality. Two lines each: what you did, what the method was, what you concluded.
Skills. Grouped, not listed flat. Accounting software, spreadsheets, compliance familiarity, languages. Be specific about level.
Additional. Languages, positions of responsibility, volunteering. Keep it to two lines. For a fuller walkthrough of the underlying shape, see our resume format for freshers guide, which this section-by-section approach follows.
The roles a B.Com actually opens, and how the resume shifts
This is where most commerce freshers lose time. They send one resume to an audit firm, a bank and a KPO. The three hiring managers want different things and none of them see it.
| Role | What the recruiter scans for | What to move to the top |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts / Finance Executive | Tally or Zoho Books, journal entries, bank reconciliation, GST basics | Software, bookkeeping experience, accounting coursework applied |
| Audit Assistant (CA firm) | CA or CMA progress, vouching, documentation discipline, willingness to travel | Professional exam status, articleship interest, attention to detail evidence |
| Banking Operations / Clerk | Degree percentage, exam scores, accuracy, customer handling, local language | Education, IBPS or other exam attempts, languages, cash-handling work |
| Back Office / KPO | Excel, typing speed, English comprehension, shift flexibility | Excel level, typing speed with a number, data accuracy examples |
| Taxation Support | GST return types, TDS familiarity, Income Tax portal exposure, deadline behaviour | Compliance coursework, filing exposure, any tax season assistance |
| Analyst-track (FP&A, research support) | Advanced Excel, financial modelling basics, SQL or Power BI, writing ability | Excel functions named, tools, any analysis project with a conclusion |
You do not need six resumes. You need one base document and the discipline to reorder the top third and swap eight or ten words before each application. If you are aiming squarely at finance rather than general commerce roles, our finance fresher resume format piece goes deeper on that track.
The skills that genuinely move a BCom fresher resume
Very few. But they move it a long way.
Excel to a real standard. Not "MS Office." Name the functions: VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP, INDEX-MATCH, pivot tables, SUMIFS, conditional formatting, text-to-columns, basic Power Query. If you can build a reconciliation sheet from two exports without manual matching, say so. This single skill separates candidates more than anything else at fresher level.
Tally. Still the default accounting software across a very large share of Indian small and mid-sized businesses, which is where most accounts jobs are. Voucher entry, ledger creation, GST configuration, generating a trial balance and P&L. A short paid Tally course with a certificate is one of the cheapest resume upgrades available to a commerce fresher.
GST and TDS familiarity. GST has been in force in India since 1 July 2017, so every practising firm deals with it daily. Know the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, what input tax credit means, and that TDS returns are filed quarterly. You are not claiming expertise. You are claiming you will not need the vocabulary explained.
Typing speed and data accuracy. For back-office and KPO roles this is screened directly. Take a free test, and if you are above 35 words per minute with good accuracy, put the number on the page.
Communication and languages. List the languages you actually work in. In client-facing and branch roles, the regional language is often the deciding factor between two similar candidates, and it belongs on the resume rather than in the interview.
CA, CS and CMA: writing an attempt honestly
A large share of B.Com students are somewhere inside a professional course. The ICAI route runs Foundation, then Intermediate in two groups, then Final in two groups, and clearing partially is normal, not shameful. Recruiters at firms know the failure rates better than you do. What they are reading is your relationship with the truth.
Three situations, three ways to write them.
- Currently pursuing. "CA Intermediate — Group I cleared (Nov 2025); Group II appearing May 2026." Clear, dated, unambiguous.
- Cleared a group and stopped. "CA Foundation cleared (2024). Not continuing; focusing on full-time accounting roles." One line. It converts a gap into a decision, which is what it was.
- Attempted and discontinued. Do not write "failed" and do not pretend it never happened, because the gap in your timeline will be asked about anyway. "Prepared for CA Intermediate through 2024–25; strengthened working knowledge of accounting standards, costing and taxation. Now pursuing accounts and audit roles." True, useful, and it explains the year.
The trap to avoid is the vague present tense — "CA aspirant," "pursuing CA" with no level or date — used for years after you stopped studying. Interviewers test it in one question. Being specific about where you stopped is far stronger than being hazy about where you are.
Before and after: bullets rewritten
The pattern in every improved line below is the same. Action, method, scale, result. Nothing is invented; the same event is simply described properly.
| Weak line | Rewritten |
|---|---|
| Knowledge of accounting | Prepared final accounts from trial balance for 12 case companies across the degree, including depreciation, provisions and closing stock adjustments |
| Helped in family business | Maintained day book and purchase records for a family retail store (2 years); reconciled daily cash and UPI collections and organised bills for the accountant each month |
| Good in MS Excel | Built a monthly expense tracker in Excel using SUMIFS and pivot tables, replacing a manual register for the college commerce society |
| Treasurer of commerce society | Handled a ₹85,000 fest budget as society treasurer; collected registrations from 300+ students and closed accounts with zero unmatched entries |
| Tally knowledge | Tally ERP 9: voucher entry, ledger and group creation, GST setup, trial balance and P&L generation (certified, 3-month course) |
| Taught students | Taught Accountancy and Business Studies to 8 Class 11–12 students over 2 years; all cleared board exams |
| Hardworking and dedicated fresher | B.Com graduate with Tally and advanced Excel; two years of hands-on bookkeeping in a family retail business |
If your current draft is mostly left-column lines, that is the whole problem, and it is fixable in an evening. Our list of resume mistakes freshers make covers the rest of the common ones.
The ATS angle, without the mythology
Applicant tracking systems are widely used by larger Indian employers, KPOs and campus platforms. They are databases, not judges. A recruiter searches the database for "Tally", "GST", "reconciliation", "B.Com" and reads whoever comes up. Nothing rejects you automatically for a missing keyword; you simply do not appear in the search.
So the practical rules are dull and they work.
- Use the words from the job posting. If it says "bank reconciliation statement," write that, not "matching bank entries." Our resume keywords guide has the commerce-side vocabulary.
- Standard section headings. Education, Experience, Skills, Certifications. Creative headings confuse parsers.
- One column, no text boxes, no tables for layout, no icons, no header-footer content. Two-column templates are the most common cause of scrambled parsed resumes.
- Submit a .docx unless a PDF is requested. Both usually parse; .docx fails less often on older systems.
- Spell out and abbreviate once each: "Goods and Services Tax (GST)". Recruiters search both forms.
- Name the file properly: Priya_Sharma_BCom_Accounts.docx.
For the mechanics of how parsing actually breaks, read how to pass ATS and then run your draft through a checker before you send it anywhere.
The order to do this in
Open a blank document. Write education and certifications first, because they are facts. List every item from the material section above, however small, without editing. Rewrite each one using action, method, scale, result. Then cut until it fits one page, keeping whatever is closest to the job you want. Write the summary last, in three lines. Save one master copy, and reorder the top third for each application.
That is the entire job. It takes an evening, and it puts you ahead of most of the commerce freshers applying alongside you — not because your degree is better, but because your page is legible and theirs is a list of adjectives.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a BCom fresher resume with no internship?
Use a section called Relevant Experience instead of Experience. Fill it with family-business bookkeeping, tuition work, a college committee finance role, part-time billing or NSS duty. Write each as a role with dates and two bullets. Then add applied coursework and one academic project. The heading is honest about the nature of the work, so the bullets can be written with full confidence.
Which skills should a B.Com fresher put on a resume in India?
Four carry real weight. Excel with named functions such as VLOOKUP, SUMIFS and pivot tables. Tally, which remains the default accounting software across most Indian small and mid-sized businesses. Familiarity with GST and TDS, including the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. Typing speed with an actual number for back-office roles. List the languages you genuinely work in too.
Should I mention a discontinued CA attempt on my resume?
Yes. The gap in your timeline gets asked about regardless, so explaining it yourself is stronger. Write what you prepared for, the period, what knowledge it left you with, and that you are now pursuing full-time roles. Avoid writing failed, and avoid the vague permanent CA aspirant line. Specificity about where you stopped reads as honesty, not weakness.
How long should a BCom fresher resume be?
One page, without exception at fresher level. Reverse chronological, single column, left-aligned, no photograph and no skill rating bars. Drop the postal address, age, marital status and father's name to free up space. If content overflows, cut whatever is furthest from the job you are applying for rather than shrinking the font below ten points.
What jobs can a B.Com fresher apply for with this resume?
Accounts and finance executive, audit assistant at a CA firm, banking operations and clerical roles, back office and KPO processes, and taxation support. With strong Excel plus SQL or Power BI, analyst-track roles open too. Keep one master resume and reorder the top third for each, because an audit firm and a KPO scan for very different things.
