How to Spot a Fake Job Offer in India (and What to Do If You Paid)

A job offer is almost certainly fake if anyone asks you to pay — for registration, training, a laptop or a refundable deposit. Verify it by finding the company's official website yourself and confirming with its HR team, and if you have already paid, call the 1930 cyber crime helpline and report on cybercrime.gov.in immediately.

How do you know if a job offer is fake?

The clearest sign is money. If anyone asks you to pay to get a job, whether for registration, training, a laptop, a "refundable" deposit or document verification, the offer is almost certainly fake. Other signs are an offer with no interview, a salary far above what the role normally pays, pressure to decide within hours, and messages that come only through WhatsApp or Telegram from a personal number.

Freshers are the main target because they are applying to many jobs at once and do not yet know how real hiring works. The checks below take ten minutes and will save you from almost every scam.

The most common job scams in India

1. Registration or "processing" fee

You get a call or SMS saying your profile was shortlisted from a job portal. To "confirm the interview" you must pay a small fee, often a few hundred rupees. After that come more fees, for training, uniform or a background check. No genuine company runs hiring this way.

2. Work-from-home task scams

A message offers easy money for liking YouTube videos, rating hotels or writing reviews. The first few tasks pay small amounts so you trust it. Then you are moved to a Telegram group and asked to "invest" or "recharge" to unlock bigger tasks, and the money disappears. 3. Fake offer letter with a deposit

You receive an official-looking offer letter from a well-known company's name, sometimes after a short phone "interview". To join, you must pay a refundable security deposit or buy a laptop through them. Real joining letters never come with a payment request. Compare what you received with a genuine offer letter format and our guide to offer letter vs appointment letter.

4. Fake interview to collect your documents

The "HR" asks for photos of your Aadhaar, PAN and bank details before any interview, sometimes an OTP "for verification". These are used to open accounts or take loans in your name. A real employer collects documents only after selecting you, usually through its own onboarding portal. See how the real background verification process works.

5. Overseas job rackets

An agent promises a job in the Gulf, Europe or South-East Asia for a large fee and arranges a tourist visa. People have ended up stranded or forced into illegal work abroad. The Ministry of External Affairs has repeatedly warned job seekers to use only registered recruiting agents.

How to verify a job offer in 10 minutes

  1. Find the company yourself. Search the company name and open its official website, not the link in the message.
  2. Check the careers page. Large companies list open roles on their own site. If the job is not there, ask HR to confirm it.
  3. Check the email domain. An offer from a company should come from an address ending in that company's domain. A Gmail ID or a domain with an extra letter or word is a red flag.
  4. Call HR on the official number. Use the phone number or email on the company's website, not the one in the offer, and ask whether this offer is real.
  5. Search the recruiter's number and name. Search the number with words like "fraud" or "scam". Other people often report the same numbers.
  6. Apply through trusted channels. Use the company careers page, campus placement cells and established portals. Our list of the best job portals in India explains which ones to use, and these Naukri profile tips help genuine recruiters find you.

Knowing the normal process makes a fake one easy to spot.

Walk-in drives are real too, but a genuine walk-in happens at a company office or a known venue and is free. Our walk-in interview tips cover what to carry.

What to do if you have paid a fake recruiter

Act within hours, not days. The faster the report, the better the chance of stopping the money.

  1. Call 1930, the national cyber crime helpline run with the Ministry of Home Affairs' Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, and report the payment.
  2. File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, with screenshots, UPI or bank transaction IDs and the scammer's numbers.
  3. Tell your bank through its official helpline and ask it to flag the transaction.
  4. Stop paying. Scammers often ask for one more "release fee" to refund you. That is part of the scam.

If you only received a suspicious call, SMS or WhatsApp message and did not lose money, report it on the Chakshu facility of the Department of Telecommunications' Sanchar Saathi portal.

Applying for a job abroad safely

The MEA's advice is consistent: use only recruiting agents registered under the Emigration Act, 1983. You can check the list of active recruiting agents on the eMigrate portal. A genuine overseas job comes with a work or employment visa, never a tourist visa, and an employment contract signed by the foreign employer, the agent and you. The MEA's December 2023 advisory also says a registered agent cannot charge you more than ₹30,000 plus GST as service charges.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to pay a fee for a job in India?

No. Genuine private employers do not charge candidates for an interview, offer letter, training, laptop or uniform. Government exams charge an application fee only through the official notification and portal, never to a person on WhatsApp.

How do I check if an offer letter is real?

Find the company's official website yourself, then call or email its HR team using the contact details listed there and ask them to confirm the offer. Check that the sender's email uses the company's own domain, not Gmail or a look-alike address.

What should I do if I have already paid a fake recruiter?

Call the 1930 cyber crime helpline immediately, then file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in and inform your bank. Reporting quickly gives the police the best chance to hold the money before it moves. Keep screenshots, payment receipts and the scammer's numbers.

Where do I report a fake job message I received but did not pay?

Report suspected fraud calls, SMS or WhatsApp messages on the Chakshu facility of the Sanchar Saathi portal (sancharsaathi.gov.in). Also block and report the number inside WhatsApp or Telegram.

How do I check an overseas job agent?

Only use a recruiting agent registered with the Ministry of External Affairs. You can check the list of active recruiting agents on emigrate.gov.in. A genuine overseas job comes with a work visa and an employment contract, never a tourist visa.
