A one page resume is the right call for most Indian freshers and professionals with up to eight years of experience - recruiters spend under ten seconds on the first scan, and everything that earns you the interview should fit in that glance. This guide shows when one page beats two, how to fit your content without shrinking the font into oblivion, and what to cut first.

When a one page resume is the right choice

  • You are a fresher or have under five years of experience. Almost always one page.
  • You have five to eight years of experience and your recent role carries the story. One page works if you trim older roles to two or three lines each.
  • You are applying through campus placements or off-campus drives, where recruiters process hundreds of resumes per day.

Two pages become acceptable past roughly eight to ten years, for senior leadership roles, or when publications, patents, or a long project list genuinely matter to the role. If you are unsure, check our ATS resume format guide - the parsing rules are the same either way, but length discipline matters more on one page.

How to fit your resume on one page

Cut content before you touch formatting. In order of what to remove first:

  • Old or irrelevant roles: anything past ten years or unrelated to the target role shrinks to one line - company, title, dates.
  • Weak bullets: any bullet without a number, a tool, or an outcome goes. "Responsible for handling social media" becomes "Grew Instagram engagement 38% in 6 months".
  • Obvious skills: MS Word, email, "hardworking", "team player". Nobody filters for these.
  • Hobbies and declaration: unless a hobby proves a job-relevant skill, it is filler. The "I hereby declare" block belongs to 2005.
  • Full address: city and state are enough.

Only after cutting, tune the layout: margins between 0.5 and 0.75 inches, font 10-11.5pt for body text, line spacing 1.0-1.15, and a single-column structure. Never go below 10pt or 0.4 inch margins - both ATS parsers and tired recruiters punish it.

What a strong one page resume includes

SectionSpace it earns
Header (name, phone, email, LinkedIn, city)2-3 lines
Summary or headline2 lines
Experience / internships50-60% of the page
Skills (tools and technologies, grouped)3-4 lines
Education2-3 lines per entry
Projects or certifications (only if they sell you)remaining space

Your headline does heavy lifting on a short resume - see resume headline examples for freshers for formulas that work.

One page resume mistakes that get rejections

  • Shrinking to 8pt font instead of cutting content.
  • Using two columns with text boxes and graphics that ATS software reads in the wrong order. Test your file with our free ATS resume checker before applying.
  • Cramming every project you ever built. Two strong, relevant projects beat six weak ones.
  • Cutting the skills section to save space - it is what recruiters and ATS filters search first.

Frequently asked questions

Is a one page resume mandatory for freshers in India?

Not mandatory, but strongly recommended. Campus recruiters and hiring managers expect one page from freshers, and a two-page fresher resume usually signals poor editing rather than rich experience.

Can a resume be less than one page?

It should fill the page. A resume that ends at 60% of the page looks unfinished. If you are short, expand bullets with numbers and outcomes, or add a relevant projects or certifications section.

What font size is too small for a one page resume?

Below 10pt is too small. Stay between 10 and 11.5pt for body text and 13-16pt for your name. If content does not fit at 10pt, cut content instead of shrinking further.

Should references go on a one page resume?

No. "References available on request" wastes two lines. Recruiters ask for references when they want them.

Does a one page resume work for government job applications?

Government applications use prescribed forms, not your resume, in most cases. Where a CV is asked (some PSUs, internships), follow the notification's format instructions over any length rule.
