How to Check EPF Balance: Missed Call, SMS, UMANG (2026)
Four official ways to check your EPF balance: missed call to 9966044425, SMS to 7738299899, the passbook portal, and the UMANG app - plus fixes for common problems.

Your EPF balance is your money, but most people check it only when they switch jobs or need a loan - and then cannot remember how. There are four official ways to check it, from a ten-second missed call to the full passbook. Here is each one, with exactly what you need.
Method 1: Missed call (fastest, no internet needed)
Give a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered mobile number. The call disconnects automatically and you get an SMS with your EPF balance and last contribution.
Requirements: your mobile number must be linked to your UAN, and your KYC (Aadhaar, PAN, or bank account) must be seeded and verified. If the SMS never arrives, the KYC link is usually the missing piece - fix that first.
Method 2: SMS
Send an SMS to 7738299899 in this format:
EPFOHO UAN ENG
Replace ENG with your preferred language code (HIN for Hindi, TAM for Tamil, TEL for Telugu, and so on). You will get an SMS back with your balance. Same requirements as the missed call: registered number plus seeded KYC.
Method 3: EPFO member passbook portal (full detail)
For the complete picture - every monthly contribution, employer share, pension share, and interest credit - use the passbook portal:
- Go to passbook.epfindia.gov.in.
- Log in with your UAN and password.
- Verify with the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
- Select your member ID (one per employer) to view or download the passbook.
The passbook shows three separate columns: your contribution, your employer's EPF share, and the EPS pension share (the 8.33% that funds your pension - see how EPS pension is calculated). The annual interest entry appears once a year after the rate is notified; for FY 2025-26 the EPF interest rate is 8.25%.
Method 4: UMANG app
- Install the UMANG app (government's unified services app).
- Register with your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Search for EPFO services and choose "View Passbook".
- Enter your UAN and verify with OTP.
UMANG is handy because the same app also handles PF transfer and KYC updates, not just balance checks.
What the numbers on your passbook mean
| Passbook entry | What it is |
|---|---|
| Employee share | Your 12% contribution |
| Employer share | Employer's 12% minus the EPS diversion |
| Pension contribution | 8.33% of wage-ceiling salary going to EPS |
| Interest | Annual credit at the notified rate |
A quick sanity check: at the Rs 25,000 wage ceiling, your monthly employee share should be Rs 3,000, employer EPF share Rs 917, and EPS share Rs 2,083. If yours is much lower, your employer may still be on the old Rs 15,000 ceiling - the new Rs 25,000 ceiling from 17 September 2026 explains what changed. How PF deduction works walks through the full split.
Common problems and fixes
- "Invalid UAN" or login fails: your UAN may not be activated yet. Activate it on the member portal with your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Missed call or SMS does not work: your mobile number is not linked to the UAN, or KYC is incomplete. Update it on the member portal first.
- Old employer's balance missing: each employer gets a separate member ID. Select the right one, or transfer the old account into the current one - see how PF transfer works on job change.
- Interest not showing: interest credits in a batch after the annual notification. If your account has had no contributions for 36 months, it turns inoperative and stops earning interest entirely.
How often should you actually check?
Once a quarter is the right cadence for most people. What you are looking for is not the number itself but anomalies: a missing month (employer filed late or not at all), a sudden drop in the employer share, or an interest credit that never arrived. Employers are required to deposit PF by the 15th of the following month - if your passbook regularly shows gaps, raise it with payroll in writing, and if it persists, with the EPFO grievance portal. Missed contributions compound quietly: three skipped months a year at the ceiling is over Rs 9,000 of your money annually, plus the interest it would have earned.
FAQ
Can I check my EPF balance without UAN?
No - every official method routes through your UAN. If you do not know it, your employer's HR can share it, or you can retrieve it on the EPFO portal using your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
How often is the passbook updated?
Contributions appear monthly after your employer files the ECR. Interest appears once a year after the rate is notified, usually a few months into the new financial year.
Is there an official EPFO app?
The UMANG app is the official channel for EPFO services on mobile. Avoid third-party "PF balance" apps - they are not affiliated with EPFO and some harvest your UAN credentials.
Why is my employer's share lower than mine?
Because 8.33% of the employer's 12% goes to EPS pension, not your EPF balance. At the ceiling that is Rs 2,083 to pension and Rs 917 to EPF, against your full Rs 3,000.
