UAN Activation and KYC Guide 2026: Step by Step (EPFO)
How to activate your UAN on the EPFO portal and complete Aadhaar, PAN, and bank KYC - plus fixes for the most common activation errors.

Every EPF service - checking your balance, transferring PF on a job change, withdrawing, even getting your pension - runs through one number: your UAN. If it is not activated or your KYC is incomplete, everything else stalls. Here is how to activate it and finish KYC, step by step.
What the UAN is
The Universal Account Number is a 12-digit number that stays with you for life, across every employer. Each new employer creates a new member ID, but all of them link to the same UAN, so your full EPF history lives in one place. Your employer generates the UAN when they first register you - ask HR for it, or find it on your salary slip.
How to activate your UAN (5 minutes)
- Go to the EPFO member portal (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in).
- Click "Activate UAN" under Important Links.
- Enter your UAN, name, date of birth, and Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Request the OTP, enter it, and submit.
- You receive a password by SMS - log in and change it.
Activation requires your mobile number to be linked with Aadhaar, because the OTP flows through Aadhaar verification. If your mobile number has changed since Aadhaar registration, update it at an Aadhaar centre first - this is the single most common reason activation fails.
KYC: what to seed and why it matters
After activation, three KYC items unlock everything else:
| KYC item | What it unlocks |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar | OTP-based services, online transfer and withdrawal, e-sign |
| PAN | Correct TDS on withdrawal (10% instead of ~34.6% without PAN) |
| Bank account + IFSC | Money actually reaching you on withdrawal or settlement |
How to seed them: log in to the member portal, go to Manage > KYC, add each document, and submit. Your employer then digitally approves each item - this usually takes a few days. Check back and nudge HR if it sits pending.
Check your KYC status in one minute
On the member portal, the KYC section shows each item as Pending (waiting for employer approval) or Approved (verified against the source - Aadhaar, PAN, or bank records). Only Approved counts. "Seeded but unverified" items - where the details do not exactly match the source database - are a common trap: even a spelling difference between your Aadhaar and your employer's records blocks approval. Fix the mismatch at the source, not in the portal.
Why this matters right now
Two things make clean UAN + KYC more valuable than usual:
- The EPF wage ceiling rose to Rs 25,000 from 17 September 2026, changing contribution amounts - you will want your passbook accessible to see the new numbers land.
- EPFO's newer systems are pushing claims and transfers fully online, including auto-settlement pilots for small balances. Every online flow assumes activated UAN and approved KYC.
Once activated, bookmark the passbook portal - how to check your EPF balance covers the missed-call and SMS shortcuts too.
When you change jobs
Never let a new employer create a fresh UAN - quote your existing one on day one. The new member ID links to the same UAN, and your old balance carries forward through a PF transfer, keeping your EPS pension service continuous (see how EPS pension is calculated for why service continuity matters). If an employer already created a duplicate UAN, raise it on the portal - merging is possible but slower than preventing it.
Common activation errors and their fixes
- "Mobile number not seeded with Aadhaar": your current number is not linked in Aadhaar. Update it at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra; it reflects in a few days.
- "Details do not match": the name or date of birth your employer filed differs from Aadhaar. Ask the employer to correct their records first - the portal validates against Aadhaar exactly.
- OTP never arrives: DND or carrier filtering is the usual cause. Try the portal at off-peak hours, and confirm the number on file is the one in your hand.
- UAN shows someone else's details: rare but serious - raise it immediately through the EPFO grievance portal with your Aadhaar proof, because contributions could be routing to the wrong account.
Most activation problems are data-mismatch problems, not system problems. Aligning name, date of birth, and mobile number across Aadhaar, PAN, and your employer's records fixes nine out of ten cases.
FAQ
How do I find my UAN if I have lost it?
Use the "Know your UAN" option on the member portal with your Aadhaar-linked mobile number, or ask your employer's HR - they generate it and it often appears on salary slips.
My employer has not approved my KYC. What now?
KYC approval needs the employer's digital sign-off, so follow up with HR directly. If the company is unresponsive or shut, EPFO regional offices can help with a physical attestation route.
Can I activate UAN without Aadhaar?
No - Aadhaar-based OTP is the standard activation route. Seeding Aadhaar is effectively mandatory for using EPF's online services in 2026.
Is the UMANG app enough for KYC?
UMANG can view and update some services, but the member portal remains the most reliable place to seed and track KYC approvals. Use both: portal for changes, UMANG for quick checks.
