The SSC CHSL salary starts at a basic pay of Rs. 19,900 per month for Lower Division Clerk (LDC) and Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) posts, and Rs. 25,500 for Data Entry Operator (DEO) posts, as per the official SSC CHSL 2025 notification. On top of basic pay, central government allowances - Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and Transport Allowance - take the starting in-hand salary to roughly Rs. 33,000-42,000 per month depending on your posting city. This guide breaks down the exact pay levels, the allowance math, and what the salary grows to over a career.

SSC CHSL posts and their pay levels

The official SSC CHSL 2025 notification lists three post categories, each mapped to a pay level in the 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix:

PostPay levelPay scale (basic pay)
Lower Division Clerk (LDC) / Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA)Level-2Rs. 19,900 - 63,200
Data Entry Operator (DEO)Level-4 and Level-5Rs. 25,500 - 81,100 and Rs. 29,200 - 92,300
Data Entry Operator, Grade 'A'Level-4Rs. 25,500 - 81,100

The pay scale shown is the range your basic pay moves through with annual increments over your career. Your starting basic pay is the first figure - Rs. 19,900 for LDC/JSA and Rs. 25,500 for DEO (Level-4). The ministry or department you are allotted decides the exact post and level, so read the post preference section of the notification carefully before filling your choices.

How the in-hand salary is calculated

Your monthly salary is basic pay plus allowances, minus deductions. The main components:

  • Dearness Allowance (DA): paid as a percentage of basic pay to offset inflation, revised twice a year. The Department of Expenditure's office memorandum of 22 April 2026 raised DA from 58% to 60% of basic pay with effect from 1 January 2026.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): paid as a percentage of basic pay based on your posting city's classification - 30% for X-category cities (population 50 lakh and above), 20% for Y-category (5-50 lakh) and 10% for Z-category (below 5 lakh), with minimum floors of Rs. 5,400, Rs. 3,600 and Rs. 1,800 respectively. These rates kicked in once DA crossed 50%.
  • Transport Allowance (TA): a fixed monthly amount plus DA on it, varying by pay level and city class.
  • Deductions: the biggest is the National Pension System (NPS) contribution - 10% of basic pay plus DA - followed by small amounts for CGEGIS (group insurance) and income tax once you cross the taxable threshold.

Approximate starting in-hand salary, post by post

Using the official pay scales above, with DA at 60% and current HRA rates, here is what a new joiner's monthly salary looks like. These are illustrative calculations - verify current DA and HRA rates before relying on exact figures, since both are revised periodically:

ComponentLDC/JSA (Level-2), X cityDEO (Level-4), X city
Basic payRs. 19,900Rs. 25,500
DA (60% of basic)Rs. 11,940Rs. 15,300
HRA (30% of basic, X city)Rs. 5,970Rs. 7,650
TA + DA on TA (approx.)Rs. 3,800Rs. 3,800
Gross salaryRs. 41,610Rs. 52,250
NPS deduction (10% of basic + DA)- Rs. 3,184- Rs. 4,080
Approx. in-hand (before tax)Rs. 38,400Rs. 48,200

Postings in Y or Z cities pay lower HRA, so the in-hand drops by roughly Rs. 2,000-4,000 for LDC/JSA and Rs. 2,500-5,000 for DEO. Against that, smaller cities usually mean a lower cost of living, and government quarters - where allotted - remove the rent question entirely (HRA stops if you take quarters).

How the salary grows over time

Three things push the number up year after year:

  • Annual increment: your basic pay rises by about 3% every year as you move up the cells of your pay level.
  • DA revisions: every DA hike applies to your (growing) basic, so increments compound.
  • Promotions: LDCs can be promoted to Upper Division Clerk and beyond, moving to higher pay levels. Departmental exams can speed this up.

Within about five years of service with regular increments and DA hikes, an LDC/JSA typically moves well past Rs. 50,000 gross per month, and a DEO past Rs. 60,000, at current rates.

Perks and benefits beyond the salary slip

The monthly figure understates what the job pays in total:

  • Pension security: NPS contributions are matched by a 14% employer contribution from the government.
  • Medical cover: CGHS (or equivalent) covers you and dependents in listed cities.
  • Leave: earned leave, half-pay leave and casual leave on central government rules, plus leave travel concession.
  • Job security and increments that private salaries at the same starting figure rarely match.

If you are still deciding whether CHSL is worth preparing for, compare this structure with the SSC CGL salary (graduate-level posts, higher levels) and the broader trade-offs in government job vs private job. For the exam itself, the SSC CHSL syllabus guide covers both tiers in detail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the starting salary of SSC CHSL LDC in hand?

Roughly Rs. 33,000-38,000 per month depending on the posting city, based on a basic pay of Rs. 19,900 plus DA (60% from January 2026), HRA (10-30% by city class) and Transport Allowance, minus the 10% NPS deduction.

Which SSC CHSL post has the highest salary?

Data Entry Operator at Level-5, with a pay scale of Rs. 29,200-92,300, is the highest-paying CHSL post. Level-5 DEO posts exist only in certain ministries and departments, so check the notification's post details before choosing preferences.

Does SSC CHSL salary increase every year?

Yes. You get an annual increment of about 3% of basic pay, DA is revised twice a year, and promotions move you to higher pay levels. Most employees see meaningful growth within the first five years.

Is HRA included in the SSC CHSL salary?

Yes, if you do not take government quarters. HRA is 30%, 20% or 10% of basic pay for X, Y and Z category cities respectively, subject to minimum floors of Rs. 5,400, Rs. 3,600 and Rs. 1,800.

What is the difference between SSC CHSL and SSC CGL salary?

CHSL is a 12th-pass exam with posts starting at Level-2 (Rs. 19,900), while CGL is a graduate exam with posts starting at Level-4 and going up to Level-8 (Rs. 47,600 starting basic). CGL posts pay more but need a degree; see the SSC CGL eligibility guide for details.
